This weekend I wanted to make a meal and celebrate in red and white to honour our flag. The Canadian flag has three bars with a maple leaf in the centre.
One of my favourite things to do on the weekend is visit the local farmer's market by my house, so I decided to share my menu and take some pics to show you what being Canadian is all about.
Canada Day Menu:
Corn on the Cob
Mixed Green Salad
Cheesy Biscuit Bread
Strawberries and Ice Cream topped with Maple Syrup
First on the list, fresh farm eggs and a fresh whole chicken. There is a very big difference between the eggs you buy in the grocery store and fresh farm eggs. We go through a large flat every week between all of the baking and breakfasts we make.
Local Ontario strawberries are so sweet this time of year! You have to buy enough because they get eaten before you arrive home.
Canada is known for the most delicious treat. Maple Syrup. Sap is collected from Maple trees and then simmered down into a distinct flavoured syrup. Pour on pancakes and use in flavouring bacon or ham.
The fresh lobster you see here is from from Maritime lobster.
Fresh Ontario tomatoes and feta cheese on a bed of local mixed greens. ( See recipe below)
Fresh lobster and "Red Lobster Cheese Biscuit Bread" ( See Recipe below)
On every Canada day we finish the day with a big bang. If you haven't figured out where you will be headed to see the fireworks tonight check out the link below on where they will be holding them in your neighborhood!
Where to watch Toronto Fire Works
3 cups flour
1 Tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 garlic cloves minced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
4 ounces cheddar cheese, cut into 1/4 inch cubes
1 1/4 cups milk
3/4 cup sour cream
3 Tablespoons of butter, melted
1 egg, lightly beaten
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9×5 loaf pan with oil. In a bowl, whisk together the first 5 ingredients. Carefully stir in cheese cubes until covered in flour mixture, this will help prevent your cheese sinking to the bottom of your loaf of bread.
In a different bowl, whisk together the remaining ingredients. Fold the wet mixture into the flour and cheese mixture, stir until just combined, do not over stir. Spread the mixture into the loaf pan. Brush with garlic butter and then Bake for 45-50 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes and then remove from pan. Allow to cool for one hour before slicing and serving.
